A nice neat list of the few things I picked up this year that happen to be on Bandcamp. At this point a third of my musical intake comes from second-hand records via vinyl stores or YouTube rips, but I always make a point to manage to buy a good handful of releases from the year I'm currently living in, lest I become a curmudgeony genre-era purist or I don't know what. I've had the pleasure to DJ a tad near the end of 2018, so many of these were thoroughly rinsed during those few gigs; the bits from Scuffed Records and Silva Electronics are confirmed dancefloor destroyers, cementing my love for that brand of whacked-out warehouse techno. The new Local Artist A-side joint on Mood Hut closed out a rather magically twisted 3-hour set at Mood Ring during my trip to NYC. I found tough, mechanical organics via the Metrist record and through Patricia Kokkett's debut slab of lean and bleepy EBM-kissed techno. Always in need of blissing out (even if through the structure of house) I finally picked up a copy of that Temple Records classic from R Weng which plays more like a series of new age drones and arps than a dance record. Renewing my faith and interest in the prescribed "overcast house" sector is the Precipitation tape on long-time inspiration 100% Silk, a superiorly lovely fuzzy wash of Larry Heard-adjacent ambient riddims. I was very happy to pick up 7Fo's debut, "竜のぬけがら Ryu no Nukegara", having well-loved their 7" of mutant-dub on Bokeh Versions last year; having nabbed it at Commend, it even had a cute hand-made risograph obi strip affixed to the spine. Nice! Oh, also my debut on Lobster Theremin came out earlier this year. Just gonna throw that one in there since I like my own music too (sometimes). More soon, I'm sure.
