I often feel like my favourite time of any (extended) party is the space around 3am til sunrise. The peak of the night is over and it’s the time to strap in and hold on til the sun comes up. It can be a challenging time for both DJ’s and dancers. For dancers it’s that time of the morning where they need to decide whether to stay and push onward, or retire and go home. And the challenge for DJ’s is to get them to stay! I love it when DJ’s can pull this off as you can’t really get away with playing classic after classic as that peak part of the night is over. Instead, selectors are required to dig a little deeper and maybe experiment a little more. For me it’s all about a fine balance of uplifting punchy baselines, some subtle vocal samples, some deepness, some darkness, some trippy-ness, with the common denominator of driving kicks.
