frail808's picks - Jan 2022

Releases that are getting a lot of play from me in January 2022

1. Crump - Ice & Spheres (Idle Hands): 2 really great tracks that have an amazing, textured feel to them. Equally at home in on the dancefloor or in lounge situations - though these tracks make me think of some of my favorite moments on darkened, hazed out dancefloors in the early hours of the morning.

2. Ourman - FKOFd043 (FKOF Records): First heard Ourman on White Peach (as an aside, one of my favorite labels in the bass realm). Unique and refreshing tracks in the 140 arena - Deep and heavy tracks that marry the best aspects of trap and dubstep without falling into any of the tropes the two genres can bring with them.

3. Konduku - Orbu (Nous'klaer records): So much love for this one. Konduku is such a unique producer whose music is hard to classify - Beautifully detailed grooves, something new to chew on with each listen. I particularly love the sense of brightness and color in these tracks - "Devre" reminds me of some of the best minimalist musicians & composers.

4. DJ Jazzy Jeff - The Magnificent (BBE): IYKYK. DJ Jazzy Jeff will always be my favorite DJ. Rock wit u is one of my favorite closers. All-around incredible release from one of the greatest musicians of this century.

5. Channel Tres - Sexy Black Timberlake (SG Lewis remix) (Self-released): #1 party starter. I defy you to listen to this and not get down.

6. Cyntel, Oldgold - Cyntel 'plonky' (Glome Sound): This one was a treat to come across - Check out the rest of Glome Sound's catalog, some killer tracks in there. Brings the wonky sub workouts you might expect from major players like Hessle Audio or 1800-dinosaur, but with a distinctly modern and club-forward bent.

7. Danvers - Interludes (WotNot music): Broken beat and slinky house tracks with 2 really on point remixes. Drop "mason" as an opener on a big system and thank me later :)

8. Ivy Lab - Death don't always taste good (2020 LDN): Maybe my favorite producer duo in bass music at the moment - these tracks work well in so many scenarios, and are adventurous and deep without losing their immediacy and accessibility. The urge to reach for a rewind everytime i play "cake" is irresistable.

9. Interplanetary Criminal - Move tools (Banoffee Pies): This EP would kick ass on the merit of "Move" alone - bound to get heads nodding and chests rattling. Also helps that every other track on this release is a straight up banger.

10. Cousin - A Message from Q (MOONSHOE): Damn, what's not to love here???? breaks, booming sub, grooves so deep you might need a lifeguard, and an amazing sense of texture + space - For fans of being in the woods at night.
