Josh Davenport - Best of 2020

by jdprt

1. Beatrice Dillon - Workaround
A peek into the future, this is what 2120A.D will sound like. If I had to label it I'd call it future techno but it's much more than that. Never heard so much done with so little. It sounds like nothing else, it moves like nothing else and I can't even work out what it is or what it's doing most of the time. It's just fascinating and time disappears every time I listen.

2. Andy Shauf - The Neon Skyline
Magnum opus level songcrafting from the most talented singer-songwriter storyteller around. Earworms for days. I think this isn't my favourite from him (The Party would definitely be that) but being a bit of a fanboy I was always going to love this.

3. BDRMM - Bedroom
Shoegaze for the masses with plenty of edge. My tastes have definitely edged to the weird electronic side in the last couple of years, but this album reminds me why this genre was such a big part of my life when all I listened to was stuff like this. Magic.

4. Khotin - Finds You Well
Sonically engaging and built with building bricks of nostalgia. Find myself returning to it for a warm blanket of the feels.

5. Lomelda - Hannah
This one caught me unaware this year, there's some magic in this I can't quite place. All I know is listened to this album more times than I can count.

6. Tara Clerkin Trio - Tara Clerkin Trio
Fresh jazz which knows its influences and readily looks forward, very engaging listening.

7. We're New Again - Gil Scott Heron (A Reimagining by Makaya McCraven)
Makaya McCraven just flexes is expert jazz chops and beat making chops both in equal measures at once, the result is a dense emotional journey with plenty of Gil's original statements preserved if not enhanced while McCraven shows he's clearing having a great time and making beautiful music at the same time.

8. Duval Timothy - Help
Clearly classically trained with experimental sensibilities, these two worlds collide into an explosion that's hard to define but harder to put down.

9. Bartees Strange - Live Forever
Exciting talent thrown into a melting pot of myriad genres that creates something new entirely of it's own.

10. Caribou - Suddenly
Sometimes an album just get listened to so much it becomes a reminder of a time, this is that for this summer which was probably more bad than good, but this reminds of the good parts.
