Hyper Real Radio - AOTY 2025: Digital Intimacies, IDM & Electronica
This list is trying to map out ten albums that presented something more vulnerable and textured. While many of these albums could well work in the club, they invited us into the intimacy of our personal listening spaces.
If pressed to name the essential three, it would be Djrum's Under Tangled Silence, lynyn's Ixona, and Matmos' Metallic Life Review, records that exemplify different pathways toward emotional electronic music. Djrum refines melancholy into something architectural, lynyn offers a warm hug reminding us why we fell in love with these genres in the first place without retreading tired 90s IDM formulas, and Matmos continue their decades-long project of making the world sing back at us.
Beyond this core trio, James Shinra and Reid Willis explore atmospheric territories that feel both alien and deeply personal, while the list balances established names with vital newcomer voices, such as data cluster's abstract patterns, Xenia Reaper's dissolute ambient drift, Yetsuby's ecstatic maximalism, Stenny's fractured techno experiments and yingtuitive's tender electronica pop.
These are records that privilege texture over sterility and cold perfection, showing that the most compelling electronic music remains stubbornly human.
